Cooking with Kids, Veggie Nooodles

This is a great simple veggie noodle dish for children.  I find the best way to introduce children to different types of food is to keep it simple, very simple.  My children love this simple noodle dish that is full of vegetable goodness.

Recently Big Sister has been too tired after school to help cook, which she’s normally begging to do.  So Littlest has been thrilled at her chance to step in and stir and measure things out.

I have to admit at first I was very apprehensive about letting her anywhere near a hot stove as she is still so little and my baby, but then I had a strong word with myself and remembered the best way for children to learn is to let them participate and trust them, take some very deep breaths and try to relax.

For me the  key to cooking with children to RELAX. As long as you know what  you are cooking and how, have all the ingredients pre-prepared, ignore the telephone or any other distractions and what feasibly your kids can do in the cooking process (under your close supervision) you’ll all have a great time.  The added benefit is the kids are so proud of their cooking ability they are keen to eat every last bit.

Cooking with Kids Veggie Noodles

INGREDIENTS

Feeds  x 4 children (up to the age of 6)

  • 130g Rice Noodles (gluten-free)
  • 1/2 a broccoli head, 2 cups cut into small florets
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil  (or your oil of choice)
  • 2 x Carrots peeled and then peel in to thin strips
  • 180g, 1 1/2 cups of frozen peas
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons of soy sauce (gluten-free)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of toasted sesame seed oil (gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

TO COOK

  1. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and cook the rice noodles as per packet instructions.  Adding the brocoli into the pot for the last two minutes.  I do this whilst the children watch.
  2. rinse the noodles and broccoli in cold water. I do this whilst the children watch.
  3. Mix the soy sauce and honey together. I let the child(ren) do this.
  4. Put the oil in a large pan and heat, then add the noodles, broccoli, peas, and mixed soya sauce and honey.  I do this as the children watch.
  5. Stir together for 2 mins. The child(ren) doe this.  Then add the sesame oil for the final minute stir through and serve, cutting the noodles up for little ones. Enjoy.

Notes:  I never leave a child to cook unsupervised and always explain the pan is hot and stand very close to the child when stirring etc.  This noodle dish will keep happily covered in the fridge for one day.

    How did I miss this post?! Great writing and I really struggle with when it’s ‘appropriate’ for my son to join in with cooking. Currently he’s shelling peas for me (and eating at least half before they reach the pot!) and I use him as my own personal audience for the mummy cooking show… I’m excited to push the experience a little further now thanks to reading this. Thanks!
